Map leaves a nasty trail when being cast.

Hello,

I believe I have brought this up at one point or another. When casting the app to my TV that has a chromecast built in, I get a really bad trailing effect whenever I move, zoom in or out of my maps. Can someone please explain this to me. It feels like the app has been out long enough that a bug like this would have been addressed

Kind Regards,

What brand and model number is your TV, and what brand and model is the device you are running IDM on?

It's possible that the ghosting is caused by insufficient memory or processing power on the TV's end, and it's also possible it's from insufficient processing power or memory on the phone/tablet doing the casting - but it also may just be that the TV uses an odd / unexpected video encoding codec.

Unfortunately I don't have any way to account for the way video is processed by google on 3rd party casting hardware (or even 1st party google-made devices for that matter) so it's possible I wont be able to improve this situation for you.

Have you tried using a different device to cast from? Do you have a stand-alone chromecast that you can try casting to on another tv? Basically, lets try and weed out some of the variables and see if we can pinpoint where the issue is coming from.

As far as the TV goes, I am not too concerned, I have a new one that should have enough power. As for the tablet, I would say that is a possibility. I have a new one on order actually. Is it also a possibility that the image is too big?

Along with that, I have attempted to use a stand alone chromecast, the same thing happens.

Ah, yeah it's possible that the casting device is the issue then if it's happening even on a stand alone chromecast. If image size is the issue (what size are your largest maps?) in the end that will come down to your casting device anyway as that will relate to how much RAM and processing power your device has. A good rule of thumb for mobile devices is to try and keep map images lower than 2000x2000 pixels. If you're running from something like an iPad Pro 12" or a newer / more powerful android tablet with 4gb+ of ram and a higher end processor, then 4000x4000+ pixels may be doable.

PC/Desktop tends to have an easier time with even larger map sizes, but it will still depend on how powerful your hardware is.

That said, what is the new device you ordered?

Thanks to google dropping support for Chromecast API in Unity3d (the engine the app was built in), Chromecast is only supported in IDM on devices running Android 5 up through 7.x. Anything running Android 8 or later will crash when trying to cast :(

Shouldn't be any issues running it from iOS though if you run it from an apple device.

I've been trying for a very long time to find someone who is able to re-write the code for casting or find an alternative solution and have come up empty so far.

The new tablet just arrived and the app is crashing whenever I attempt to cast with it. The maps I have are higher quality, over 2000x2000. I have to say so far, even after 3 years, I'm not impressed, this product has never worked as intended, across multiple versions of android and multiple devices. I'm sorry you are having finding trouble finding someone to write the code, but for me this has been a multi-year dump. I'm sorry to say that, but this product has never worked for me as intended due to what seems countless limitations and bugs within the software. I just do not feel like I should be having to depend on one line of products (Apple) to successfully use this app.

As for the device, it is a 10 in Lenovo tablet, 3 gb of ram, and an 8 core mobile processor.

If it's crashing whenever you cast, then it's likely running Android 8 or above, which as I said early, had the rug pulled out from it by Google discontinuing support for Unity3d and Chromecast in those android OS versions.

I'm sorry you're dissatisfied with the app, I know how frustrating it can be when a piece of software isn't performing well enough. It was a work of passion built on a shoestring budget, supported as much and whenever I have been able to. Unfortunately, that's the best I can offer you for now.
